Children’s Art Project Encourages Character Development Children need more inspiration in their lives and less entertainment. A children’s art project is one way to encourage this. Kids who always have to be entertained become bored and frustrated. Most entertainment is self-centered and doesn’t develop ennobling qualities such as courage and sacrifice. The Bible contains real stories of God working in people’s lives to develop the character qualities every parent wants for their children. The Kids Color Me Bible as a children’s art project focuses young minds on drawing Bible stories for their own book. It’s a win-win-win. Children win by thinking about how to illustrate Bible stories. They develop art skills by drawing Bible stories and form good character qualities when they absorb Bible lessons. Parents win by discussing Bible lessons illustrated by their children’s art work. Everyone wins when children produce a keepsake book of illustrated Bible stories. Imagine the fun and inspiration for a future generation of grandchildren. What other children’s art project has this kind of triple-win outcome? I became interested in a children’s art activity when I launched the Children’s Bible Contest in 1995 to select a child to feature in a video documentary on the work of missionaries around the globe. The huge prize of a trip around the world attracted a lot of attention from national media. Willard Scott promoted the contest on the Today Show. Even though children could choose from five ways to enter the contest, the children’s art activity proved to be the most popular by far. Through this children’s art activity, I learned that most children would rather draw than write. It’s as if God has breathed into all kids a full dose of creativity. Each Kids Color Me Bible story contains a full page for children to illustrate. The masthead of the Heaven Herald newspaper proclaims the headline for each Bible story with a place at the bottom of the page for child artists to sign their artwork. It’s as though there’s a newspaper for residents of heaven about events on Earth. The Kids Color Me Bible is a free, online, printable book. Another unique children’s art project is the Kids Talk About God Art Gallery. This online gallery features some of the best children’s art work I’ve collected from two art contests and two books. More than 70 pieces are available for free, as high-resolution printouts to decorate children’s rooms or to use as memory cards. With one exception, all the featured children’s art work illustrates Bible verses. Each chapter of the Kids Color Me Bible features children’s art work. I’ve found that kids are more interested in what their peers have drawn than beautiful drawings by professional artists.
